I am a biathlete competing for the US Biathlon Team and the Craftsbury Green Racing Project. Biathlon is a wildly popular sport in northern Europe; it combines cross country ski racing and rifle marksmanship. I began skiing at age 2 with my family in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and have been cross country ski racing since age 5. I learned how to shoot after graduating from Dartmouth College in 2008 when I moved to Lake Placid, NY and joined US Biathlon’s development program. For years, my biggest goal was to earn a spot on the US World Cup team, which I finally achieved in November 2011. From there, my season continued to get better and better, culminating with a 5TH PLACE at 2012 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS! This result tied the best finish ever by a US woman.
I currently live in Vermont and am a member of a local professional ski team, the Craftsbury Green Racing Project. We are a group of professional cross country skiers who explore issues of sustainability and promote endurance sports in our community. I split my time between Craftsbury and Lake Placid, NY, the headquarters of the national team. Besides skiing and shooting, I love hiking, gardening, camping, biking, trail running, unicycling, canoeing, and practically anything that involves mountains and the outdoors. In the past couple years, my teammates have introduced me to hunting, which is quickly becoming a new hobby.
Hope all’s going well and will be keeping track of your efforts.
Good luck!
Lots of good luck wishes are with you this week.
We are so proud of you no matter what, but good luck from moxie and Uncle Tim!

And go Big Green!
Susan, congratulations on your seventh place on Thursday. I’m working on a small piece for the Chronicle. Wondering if you’re still using the broomstick gunstock. Good luck tomorrow. — Chris
You are doing some amazing things Susan! And your blog is really interesting. Best wishes to you.
It’s been so exciting to watch your career and cheer you on! Happy New Year from Jen and Quinn
Ever since your 5th place at the World Championships in Rupholding, it was clear, Susan, that you had all the skills you needed to be at the top. The 4th place at Antholz just confirmed that. Good luck and serenity (Удачи и спокойствия!) in Sochi!
I was one of the poorer team members of the Brattleboro X-C team with your father. So greetings to him.
All our best wishes and luck from Alaska! We’re routing for you!!!
With every good wish for your success and good time, Susan. What a milestone for you and yours!!
Hartland, VT cheers you on!
Congratulations Susan,
I don’t know if you’re related to Cy, but I skied for him at the Jrs. in Steamboat, and at NEC. I think of him often. Regardless, we’re all soooooo proud!!! What a feat you have accomplished for yourself and your Country.
Enjoy the moment and your time there.
All the best,
Clark Curtis
Clark, I too skied for Sy Dunklee at NEC.
Susan, is obviously Stan’s daughter. I believe Stan was Sy’s nephew.
Great race for her today 2/19/2017 .
Sy would have been very proud.
I knew a Dunklee at Kents Hill School decades ago. He was the ski coach Any relation?
Sy I believe had a nephew named Stan, he talked about him often as Stan was an Olympian. Susan is stands daughter.
Susan is daughter of Stan Dunklee, nephew of (my dad) Si Dunklee who served as ski coach at Kents Hill School, University of Maine Orono, Colby, Amherst Collete and New England College. Stan was a 2-time U.S. Olympic XC skier and set an all-time US best record. Stan’s brother Everett also competed XC on US Olympic team. Si was very proud of Stan & Everett, and if he were alive today, would be absolutely THRILLED to follow Susan’s achievements – as am I and all of Susan’s extended family!
HI Bill – I remember your name from Kents Hill days (we moved when I was just 6), as Si spoke highly of you. All best wishes to you, and thanks for remembering Si Dunklee! Grace Dunklee Cohen gadc (at) tds (dot) net
Great job in Sochi! We are so proud of you! — the Vallina family from MD
Dear Susan! Please accept my greatest congratulations with your today’s success, with your third place in WC sprint race at Holmenkollen. As far as I know there was the first time in your sporting career when you would stand on the podium. Moreover, it seems you to be the first US female biathlete who managed to do that. So, this day 20th March 2014 can be reckoned as the historic date both for you personnally and for US female biathlon in general. That’s great! I kept an eye on your perfomancies in WC this season and must say you deserved such result quite fairly because you often gained places at TOP10 including fourth places which were pretty nearly to the podium. I am sure at present you have enough skills and experience for further progress of your sporting activities and hope in the nearest future you will be able not only to repeat your success but improve it by winning the victory in some WC or World Championship race. Kind regards from Ukraine.
Congratulations!
Dear Susan!
must feel good to be for some days back on your own continent.
My best wishes for the days in Canada and Presque Isle.
and of course for the world Championship.
I wish to one, who works so hard:
perfect healthiness, a good mood,
a strong body and a concentrated brain
and – this big bunch of luck,
that is necessary for reaching the top.
You know:
To the brave everything is possible!
So, best wishes
from Josef the golden dog and his masteress.
